http://www.amroutes.com/ram/AR_0642HMasekela1.ramskip to right before 7:40 - they're talking about Miles Davis and Dizzy and then at 7:40 there is a snippet of this Hugh Masekela song that starts with singing then launches into this totally killer trumpet solo, but they don't identify it in the surrounding interview that i can tell. Frack. Anyone here with just that particular slice of arcane bebop/world knowledge that sits just outside my grasp?

The first cut sounds like a live recording on the 'Americanization Of Ooga Booga' LP. The cut right after he's quoting Miles Davis cursing is a live version of 'Gold' which originally appeared on "Masekela"-Universal City Records.. That record is the most emotionally raw album I own. 'Mace and grenades', goddammmmm!
damn, that's excellentAmericanization isn't available on cd i don't think, but selected songs off that and a later album are bundled on "Lasting Impressions of Ooga Booga":Bajabula Bonke Dzinorabiro Unhlanhia Cantelope Island U-dwi Masquenada Abangoma Mixloydia Con Mucho Caarino Where Are You Going? Morolo Bo Masekela Unohilo Any idea if it's one of those? I notice there's also a cd available called "The Chisa Years: 1965-1975 (Rare and Unreleased)" that is out of print but readily available:Afro Beat Blues Mahlalela Amo Sakesa Joala U Se Mcani Tepo Za Labalaba Witch Doctor Melodi (Sounds of Home) Ahvuomo Aredze A Cheeka Laka Laka Awe Mfana Macongo Thanks for the tip on "Masekela" - "Gold" sounds great - i'll probably get the cd if it's available. But my main obsession is with the first one - that just sounds fantastic right now for some reason.

I have a loan copy of Masekela you could borrow. If I can find a minute, I will burn a copy for you. Very worth it
my turntable sucks - i'm waiting on Tom Wagner to get a decent one in and refurb for me ...But, i found the name of the song, it's "Dzinorabiro" and it is on the Americanization lp, now available on the collection Lasting Impressions of Ooga Booga. I also got "Still Grazing" kind of his greatest hits volume 2 cd, which has Gold and several songs off that second album you mentioned (including Mace and Grenades), which is not available on cd in a form that matches the LP contents ... I can't wait to hear the whole of "Dzinorabiro" that shit is fantastic. Thanks for pointing me in the right direction.I'm also getting "The Birds" by Coconut Monkey Rocket - i heard a cut "Juicy Jungle" a while back i really dug

Sorry, I can't help you, but I just wanted to say the Hugh Masekela's "Promise of a Future" album is the bee's knees.
argh, drowning in possibilities, here, hehe. Yeah, the more i listen the more i like. Hey, you might have an idea who i'm trying to think of: I had a record in the mid 80's that was in the genre of like Harold Budd "Pavilion of Dreams", Brian Eno's "On Land" and other ambient, albums with Bill Laswell, Fred Frith, John Zorn, etc. This particular album was pretty ambient and probably one degree of separation from the other names i just mentioned, but it either featured or some of its cuts featured a trumpet player doing really cool spacey stuff through effects. It was fantastic, but i can't recall specifically what album it was. Does that ring a bell at all with you (or anyone)?

He was the 'spacey trumpet' go-to guy for Laswell et al in the 80s & 90s. Part of that M-Base collective too, I believe.Look him up on allmusic.com--you might find the record you're thinking of.
